Cobourg waterfront group ask for changes to marina funding

(Budget process has begun with several meetings scheduled)

COBOURG — Changes to Cobourg’s waterfront came to the forefront in Cobourg’s first public budget meeting.

The public budget consultation meeting drew about 20 people with presentations from three groups — the Cobourg Taxpayers Association, the Cobourg Dragon Boat and Canoe Club and Cobourg boaters — on Nov. 2. Council also received e-mailed submissions.

The meeting was scheduled to create an open forum and discussion for the public and council, said Cobourg’s Deputy Mayor John Henderson.

Speaking on behalf of an informal group of Cobourg boaters who use the Cobourg Marina, Rob McLeod and Stan Stewart asked council not to spend money on the Cobourg Marina.

COBOURG – Cobourg council has voted to establish a new advisory group — the waterfront advisory committee, which would provide public and user-group input to council on projects carried out on the waterfront and adjacent public lands.

One impetus for the group, according to chief administrative officer Stephen Peacock’s report to council’s committee of the whole meeting Monday, is the strong opinions that have been expressed over the past year regarding marina-expansion proposals.
