Racing at the Cobourg Yacht Club

We Have a Passion for Racing from our weekly club races, to members participating in regional and international regattas and events. Club races are held on Wednesday evenings (Keel) from May to October, with 3 Monday Night keel ‘Tune-Up’ races in spring to help kick start the season and shake out winter cobwebs, and 3 in the autumn to pack in the last few sailing days before Lift out. Centreboard Races are held Friday evenings from June to September. Throughout the summer months, several specialty races are held on weekends which often turn out as family events. There are several fleets of sailboats accommodating many racing skill sets: from keen sailor to beginner crew. Wednesday Night Racing ends with the race results and the Skipper’s Dinner Special announced in the dining room of the clubhouse. For the centreboard fleet, there is always something special on the menu for the Friday night gang after the dinghies are stored away.

Specialty Races

The Centennial Cup (originating in 1967), is a club team race, including all types of sailboats (keel and centreboard), between the CYC and the Port Hope Yacht Club. The course alternates yearly beginning at the “visitors” club and ending at the hosting club. A reception is held in the clubhouse either in Port Hope or Cobourg and welcomes the members of both clubs. The Trophies are awarded at this reception.

The Curtis Cup was begun by Ralph and Donna Curtis and was originally held on Father’s Day weekend. The club keel boats race across Lake Ontario to Oak Orchard where they socialize with the members of that club and then race back the next day. Recently it has evolved to include racers and cruisers.

Throughout the summer we race, including: a race to Peter’s Rock, a single-handed race, a double-handed race, and the Countess of Dufferin Cup. Some years we hold match racing using two matched centreboard boats. In the fall many CYC members race with Port Hope Yacht Club to Oak Orchard in Port Hope’s annual Cloud 9 Race.
